What should I be doing with my life?
One day you wake up and say to yourself “What should I be doing with my life? You’ve been working at a job for a while and you suddenly wake up to the realization that you don’t want to be doing this for the rest of your life. Inside you know the current job is killing you. It’s sucking out your creativity, your enthusiasm, your joy of working. This isn’t what you want for your life.
You want a life!
You’re not a swearer but ‘Damn it’. “I want more for my life than this.” “I want to enjoy what I’m doing. I want to feel that my mind is challenged. That ideas are popping into my brain and I’m working on solutions; working on creating something new; working on something that will make a difference in this world I’m living in.”
Okay. You had your hissy-fit. Now, let’s get back to reality. This job is what I went to school for. I’m doing work I know how to do. There will be promotions somewhere down the line. Others are counting on me to bring in this paycheck. I’m counting on that paycheck. I need to pay the rent/mortgage. There are still two years to pay on the car. Forget about those dreams. Put them back in the hamper and stuff the lid on them.
Break through day
You’ve had this argument in your head time and time again and you know how it ends, almost before it starts. But today…..it won’t go away – the dream; the freedom to choose a life you want. It won’t go into the box today. Suddenly you stand up and march to your phone and call in sick. You can’t face that job one more day. It’s a mental health day. Yeah.
Jeans and a tee are donned and you go to the kitchen for the first cup of coffee. Today is for you. What should I be doing with my life? God – give me some answers. Whoa. What was that? Asking God for help? You’re not even sure there is a God. Nana’s always encouraging us to ask Him for help and direction. Maybe there is something in what she says? Anyway – I can use all the help that’s out there. So – God – If you’re really there – could you help me? Please? I can’t keep on with this job.
Okay. Time to really think about what I want to do. Sitting here is nice but it’s not getting anything done. Where’s my laptop? It’s so nice and quiet here today. I really can hear myself. Maybe I’ve been using those earbuds to keep me from thinking? I rather like the silence.
Now. What would I really like to do with my life? Maybe it’s finally time to write some of this stuff down. Haven’t done that before – just kept it all in my head but today I’m going to try something different. What do I have to lose? I’m already home and not at that JOB. Okay, brain – open up and talk to me. Okay God – I’m listening.
What am I good at? Let’s see, what do people tell me I’m good at? And what do people ask me to help them with? What do I like doing best?
Wait a minute. Wasn’t there a list of questions to ask yourself about your Ideal Opportunity? Let me see. Oh yes – here it is.
Guess today is the day to sit here and answer some of those questions.
Looking at the results
Wow. It’s already lunch time. Amazing how fast time flies when you are using your brain. Guess it’s time for a break. To be continued?
