“Today is the day!”
It’s pouring outside and you think –
“Isn’t that rain just wonderful!”
What made the difference? Did you say that prayer asking God to tell you what to do? Or did you watch a video show on TV last night that sparked an idea? What phrase did you hear someone say to you that ignited your ambition? Sometimes you know just what made the difference. Other times you have no idea why today is the day for action.

I was just offered a class to take on ‘writing a course to sell’ for websites. The price was within my budget. It came from a source I trusted and had worked with in the past. I said “yes” to the course and almost immediately my brain snapped into attention and started thinking actively about what I wanted to do with the outcome of the course. The course hadn’t even started but the first step for change had been made. I made a decision that something needed to be done and took action to do it. Finally, I chose to stop sitting on the sidelines watching life go by.

First Steps are Crucial
It’s taking that first step forward that makes all the difference. Suddenly you’re no longer a ‘body at rest’ if you remember any of your high school science. Now you’re a ‘body in motion’. Do you remember the rest of that line? “A body in motion tends to remain in motion.” And of course – that procrastination part of the proverb: “A body at rest tends to remain at rest.” This is Newton’s law of motion. Interesting to note in this equation is that the body at rest remains at rest until it is acted on by an outside force.

Okay. Does that mean we must wait until something or someone else gives us that impetus to move? That could happen but not always. Unlike stationary objects, our brains are living substances and while those laws of motion apply to a degree in getting us to move because we are living breathing beings, other factors enter the equation. Isn’t it fun to suddenly become scientists?
To start, our brains have life and because they have control over our bodies, motion can be initiated by our thoughts. Sometimes, we can be sound asleep and thoughts can make us wake up to use the bathroom. Feelings of hunger can get us off the couch and we rummage through the refrigerator for a snack. In the same way, a sudden idea coming into our brains can initiate actions in what we do with our lives. There are times the impetus comes from outside but often it comes from within ourselves. These are all ways to show us how to stop sitting on the sidelines watching life go by.
