An Opportunity Challenge from Nana
As we go along on this blog, every so often you will have an Opportunity Challenge from Nana. This is an opportunity that I see that needs taking on, but it’s one that is too big for one individual. Today’s is one that may take everyone reading this to work on. And not only you but everyone else that you can get to join you and help.
Independence Day Challenge
This being Independence Day, celebrating the start of our country’s freedom from England, it seemed right to bring up the challenge that involves this United States of America.
I’m very upset about the reaction to this new President. We’ve always complained about every President, but this time along with complaints, there’s violence. I don’t understand why. I believe President Trump’s call to “Make America Great Again” is a good part a description of this challenge.
Behind the Scenes of this Opportunity Challenge
Having lots of free time in retirement, I decided to take that free course online about the President that Hillsdale College was offering. I was amazed. First lesson, and already I was learning things about our Constitutional form of government that I never knew. I thought I knew that well. I knew that the writers had two basic premises starting out. They all had a belief in God, which after all is why the Pilgrims came here, and they had a love of country, having just risked their lives fighting the Revolutionary War. And the winning of that war is what we are celebrating today, July 4th. Love of God and Love of Country were the two main premises of belief in this country up until the 60’s. It’s what unified our citizens and made us one nation. With the loss of that, we gradually became splintered into factions, fighting against one another.
The Change in Nana’s Lifetime
As I listened to the teaching, I knew something was wrong with today’s viewpoint. Neither of those beliefs is popular today. And yet, they were prominent when I went to school and learned American History. We started every school day with the Pledge of Allegiance and the Lord’s Prayer. Friday assemblies included the Star-Spangled Banner, America the Beautiful, America, and lots of other patriotic songs. We knew the words to all of them and enjoyed singing them.
So, whatever changed in this country, happened in my lifetime. Happened when I was the age of today’s millennial generation. I missed it while it was happening. I apologize for that. My generation failed you.
What Happened to Make the Change?
Love of God Goes
I know when I was in my twenties, they took God out of the schools. There was a lot of complaints about that and no one I knew thought that was right. But the decision came down from the Supreme Court and we just assumed if we voted in those who felt like us, that it would be fixed. It wasn’t.
Love of Country Goes
But Love of Country? I have no idea when we lost that. Vietnam War? Maybe. But there, we were angry that our Presidents had gotten us into a conflict with no exit strategy. We were glad when it was over. It was more than that. We lost more of our Love of Country when we turned away our responsibilities for one another and gave those to the government.
Federal Government Expands Beyond the Constitution
In this online class from Hillsdale College, I learned that it was in the 60’s that an abundance of regulatory bodies was introduced into our form of government. I never even noticed that happening. We complained all the time about how intrusive the government was becoming into our everyday life. It wasn’t right. States’ Rights and Individual Rights were being put aside. The Federal government was never meant to be involved in things like education, health care, consumer safety, etc. A quick look at the list of regulatory agencies today will astound you.

The Opportunity for Change Nana Sees
I think it’s very important that we return to a Constitutional form of Government. It’s not something I can do alone. It’s going to take several generations of individuals working together to bring us back to the Republic that was formed. To the Republic that believed in Love of God and Love of Country. A Republic that believed in not only freedom of individuals but that those individuals would be responsible for themselves. We’ve given many of our freedoms and responsibilities to the government. It’s time we returned them to the individuals and the States where they were meant to be. Many think the United States is a Democracy. It is not. Learn what a Republic form of Government really is. This is what we are – or are supposed to be.
